United through our Federation

The Red Cross is the largest humanitarian organization in the world. We operate via 189 national associations worldwide, have 17 million active volunteers and hundreds of thousands of permanent staff.

The respective national Red Cross and Red Crescent Movements together make up the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies, or the Federation (IFRC) for short. The IFRC secretariat is based on Geneva.

The IFRC represents all national federations at international level. It promotes cooperation between national associations and helps them to work together. In the event of natural disasters or technological emergencies it coordinates international relief efforts for victims. In the case of armed conflict, though, it is the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) which steps in.
