Q: I would like to register as a volunteer to help in the disaster area.
A: At the present time, the Belgian Red Cross Flanders is not looking for new volunteers for the aid operations in the affected areas. The Belgian Red Cross Flanders dispatched two Flemish people to Haiti a few days after the disaster as part of the Benelux Emergency Response Unit. These people have received specific training. The most important assignment of the ERU-team is to ensure that aid is distributed as quickly and efficiently as possible among the disaster victims.

Q: I would like to donate goods for the victims in Haiti.
A: The Belgian Red Cross Flanders advises against collection and sending to Haiti of goods. Collection campaigns require a lot of work for sorting the goods. Compliance with quality labels is among the requirements. Clothing and blankets have to be washed and disinfected.
Furthermore, the World Health Organisation imposes strict conditions on the collection of medicinal drugs. Medication may not have the same composition all over the world, and the local aid providers must also be familiar with these products.
Furthermore, transport for all these goods is expensive. Therefore, the Red Cross prefers to buy the products in the country itself. So no collected goods are sent to the disaster area via the Belgian Red Cross Flanders.

Q: I want to set up a fundraising campaign to aid Haiti.
A: The Belgian Red Cross Flanders does not currently have any staff who could coordinate such campaigns. You can start up a campaign of your own, and send the money collected to the account number 000-0006566-67, quoting “Haiti earthquake”.
Q: I have no news about a relative in Haiti. Can the special Red Cross website help me search for them?
A: The International Red Cross has set up the website http://www.familylinks.icrc.org for the survivors of the Haiti earthquake. People can enter their own personal details and those of their missing relatives on the website. People in the affected area can also register. Through this website, the Red Cross hopes to restore contact between family members faster.
